This article discusses MCP (Model Context Protocol), which I view as another significant attempt at protocol standardization in the AI field following Function Calling. Imagine an LLM as a creature with a brain but no limbs; MCP is providing it with standardized 'limbs' and 'sensors'. It enables LLMs to securely and quickly access local data sources, remote services (APIs), define reusable prompts, execute tools, and even perform agentic sampling through a unified client/server architecture. This directly tackles the long-standing issues of LLMs lacking real-time performance and the ability to handle complex logic. Especially the three core modules—Resource, Tools, and Prompts—are almost tailor-made for building a 'general-purpose AI agent'. The provided FastMCP example code is also instructive, showing how to rapidly expand an LLM's 'networking' and 'computing' capabilities, which my team has already begun experimenting with as a POC.

Notable

The MCP concept is appealing, but implementation still poses challenges. First, although it's an 'open protocol', its 'promotion and ecosystem building' will take time. Whether it can truly become a widely accepted standard like USB-C remains to be seen. Second, the local execution model of MCP Server introduces new operational complexities at the enterprise scale, particularly in 'data security and permission management'. Ensuring secure connections between local servers and various data sources, and preventing potential misuse, is a major concern. Additionally, the article introduces the concept and provides an example, but it barely touches on performance bottlenecks in high-concurrency and high-availability scenarios, or 'distributed deployment', which is an unavoidable challenge in large-scale applications.

Perspectives

In October 2025, AI Agents have become a must-win battleground. Whoever provides an efficient, secure solution for extending LLM capabilities externally will gain a strategic advantage in the Agent ecosystem. MCP's emergence aims to unify the interface between LLMs and the outside world at the protocol level, which is a clear attempt to seize 'standard leadership' in AI infrastructure. If MCP can achieve widespread adoption, it will significantly lower the development threshold for AI Agents, accelerating their implementation across various industries. This will also drive cloud service providers and AI platforms to offer more robust MCP-compatible services. For our team, closely monitoring MCP's ecosystem development and even considering participation in its construction is a necessary step in our AI strategy.
